Singing @ Glaisnock

Welcome

NEWS

Many of you will be aware of the difficulties that we had at Glaisnock House last year, when we discovered that the refurbishment of the 'big house' had been botched - resulting in a dangerous building notice being served and an enforced move for our summer schools towards the end of week four.

We have faced some frustrating, difficult and at times stressful times since then. We were keen to hold on to our vision for Glaisnock, but I personally (Pete Heywood) am of the opinion that we have been facing either some serious financial and political corruption or an incredible level of management incompetance that conveniently delivers a huge financial bonus to those involved. For the time being at least, those responsible appear to be getting away with it.

We had serious discussions with Friars Carse and the Allanton Sanctuary about moving this years summer schools there. They were great 'emergency venues' for us last year - but were unable to address some of the issues, mainly relating to accommodation and finding some organisational base for our future development.

We have now found a wonderful new venue, Barons Craig at the tiny village of Rockcliffe on the Colvend Coast near Dalbeattie. The premises, a country house hotel in a setting that could be described as 'the Garden of Eden with a sea view', offers a fabulous setting for our summer schools. The owner, David Mabbs, is committed to a 'cultural future' for Barons Craig and is looking forward to working with us in a long-term relationship.

We proved last year that it is 'what we do, rather than where we do it' that matters. Each year of our summer schools, since the first year in 2002, has turned out to be special in many ways. Perhaps we were meant to experience the varied delights of Scotland! Even though we are a little late in the day in our organisation this year, we hope that you will trust us to again deliver the goods. We have a fabulous team of tutors, a great venue and we are in a wonderful part of Scotland with some really interesting local history. You will have a great time!!!

2008 will be the second year of our six week long summer schools series. In 2007 we ran a six week series of workshops in the traditional arts held in Glaisnock House, Cumnock, in the heart of stunning Ayrshire countryside. 2008 will follow a similar format. Each week will also feature various evening activities, including performances by our “Artists in Residence”.

'Living Tradition Summer Schools' is a modern style of event using the highest quality of traditional arts teaching combined with public performance to provide opportunities for participation and learning at all levels. The workshops will offer a quality learning experience and bring international masters of the folk arts to Scotland. The ‘arts workshops’ will be strongly based on the traditional arts – music, song, dance and storytelling – but will also include other art and craft activities, tutors and students from relevant local projects.

We hope that we can tempt you to join us!
